$13,238.86 Left in a NYC Taxi

Filmmaker Casey Neistat wrote about his experience in late July of losing $13,238.86 worth of property in the back of a cab.

Neistat writes: “before you call me an asshole for forgetting my stuff in a cab consider i’d been traveling for 10 days straight always with a producer who was responsible for the gear. this one time i offered to take it. was distracted w my cell phone, the bags were in the trunk and i was dead tired. these things happen in life.”

Fantastic snapshot of strangers being totally amazing. [via DF]

Mosaic Man

One of the unusual features or quirks of New York City’s Lower East Side are these beautiful telephone pole mosaics. It’s easy to miss them or never even notice them, but for more than 30 years Vietnam War vet and former union carpenter Jim Power has crafted them.

Etsy catches up with the artist who’s become known as “the Mosaic Man” as he continues work on the Mosaic Trail — eighty lampposts covered in mosaics representing significant areas and people of the East Village.

Anthony Bourdain and VICE Tackle NYC

Anthony Bourdain and VICE Magazine combine their powers of awesomeness (proof, proofer, proofier, proofiest) into a NYC eating and drinking guide.

Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations takes us on a brass-knuckled culinary tour of New York. He starts us off with amazing cured meats and cheese at Salumeria Rosi before heading to the distinguished Wakamba cocktail lounge. After a few beers to cleanse the palate, we end the night with one of the best pieces of meat we’ve ever had at Bourdain’s old base of operations, Brasserie Les Halles.

The episode is part of VICE Magazine’s food series, Munchies.

NYC Wants to Ban Soda

Bloomberg wants to ban the sale of “large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts” to combat rising obesity, according to the New York Times.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

Jesus, I know obesity is bad, but this is taking the nanny state to a ridiculous extreme. At what point are people held accountable for consuming these harmful products? If a person wants to drink soda, eat McDonald’s, smoke cigarettes, bang prostitutes, or gamble their paycheck, what responsibility is it of the state to tell them they can’t?

A Ghostbusters Tour of New York City

Bleeding Cool’s Patrick Willems and Matt Torpey recently moved to NYC and did the only sensible thing any new New Yorker should do. He took a Ghostbusters tour of the city. It dawns on me, while watching them visit every location from the film in one afternoon, how perfect Ghostbusters is as a NYC film. It’s not too often a supernatural comedy bests a Scorcese or Woody Allen film for best NYC movie ever.

Behold the Glorious Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge” is a biannual moment wherein the sunset aligns with the east-west streets of Manhattan’s main street grid. There was one that took place yesterday at precisely 8:17 PM. Thankfully, someone was able to photograph it for the UK Telegraph.

As if you needed another reason to feel like the world is coming to an end. There’s no truth to the rumor that Jerry Bruckheimer is working on a script for Michael Bay using Manhattanhenge as a McGuffin.
