The Scientific Power of Music

AsapSCIENCE, the gang that made the scientifically acceptable videos about napping at work and superheroes — which I totally slept on and never posted (I KNOW!) — explain why music is probably your drug of choice.

Just digging into these guys’ videos makes me realize I’ve been totally ignoring one of YouTube’s best channels.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Explained

By someone on Reddit, no less:

What people call “Obamacare” is actually the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, people were calling it “Obamacare” before everyone even hammered out what it would be. It’s a term mostly used by people who don’t like the PPACA, and it’s become popularized in part because PPACA is a really long and awkward name, even when you turn it into an acronym like that.

Anyway, the PPACA made a bunch of new rules regarding health care, with the purpose of making health care more affordable for everyone. Opponents of the PPACA, on the other hand, feel that the rules it makes take away too many freedoms and force people (both individuals and businesses) to do things they shouldn’t have to.

So what does it do? Well, here is everything, in the order of when it goes into effect (because some of it happens later than other parts of it).

Now, there’s no excuse. Doesn’t matter if you’re for or against it, so long as you understand what the law is and have an educated opinion about it.

Why YouTube Videos Freeze at 301 Views

Every wonder why a video on YouTube that has thousands of comments, likes and dislikes has only been viewed by 301 people? Brady Haran of Numberphile paid a visit to Ted Hamilton of YouTube Analytics to get the answer. Turns out, the answer comes down to sloppy coding. [via uproxx]

Is Pluto a Planet?

Yes it is. It’s just technically a dwarf planet according to the IAU, which down-graded the celestial object in 2006. Internet explainer C.G.P. Grey offers an explanation for those still upset with the change.

The long and short of it, at least according to a Harvard astrophysicist I once met and who voted to keep Pluto a planet, is that if Pluto didn’t get downgraded, it would be planetary anarchy. Instead of nine planets in the solar system, there would be thousands of planets to learn and so, it was easier for astronomers to down-grade Pluto than it would be to upgrade all similar celestial objects to planetary status.
